Luca

a car made largely from recycled waste

SRF (SWISS NEWS) CLIP ABOUT LUCA go to 19:10

From February 2020 – about June 2020, I joined TU/e ecomotive as an industrial designer to help design the interior of their super-sustainable city car of the future, Luca. In a student team of ~20 my role was, within a design team, to sketch and model the frontal interior of the car. Moreover, my job included research into alternative, sustainable production methods of parts of the car’s interior, including the dashboard. Individually I worked on the design of the instrument cluster face. Once the car was finished, TU/ecomotive’s achievement made both national and international news on over 320 TV stations, many large radio stations, and countless articles. The car was unveiled on the 8th of October by Dutch astronaut André Kuipers.

During the semester I have worked with other design team members and engineers. I learned how to collaborate with engineering requirements, how to approach stricter meetings with chairman, minute takers, and presentations, and how to present my own work every week.

This experience helped me become more confident in the presentation of my work, as well as asking other team members for help and being honest about my abilities. Most importantly, I have also gotten better at communicating when something goes wrong. I learned that when something goes wrong, it’s best to not only tell somebody about it as soon as possible, but also already propose steps to fix the problem. This way you will become a person that can think for themselves, and be seen as someone who fixes problems, not causes them.

This student team has strengthened my professional skill of cooperation to a large degree, as I cooperated within a group of 20 people from various fields, as opposed to the usual 3-4 designers.
