Heart Surgeon's Throne

A reading chair for the surgeon's house

During an internship at an architecture firm in Zurich, I have developed a custom furniture concept for a client who is a cardio-vascular surgeon for many years. The concept is a luxurious reading chair resembling a heart, and was meant as a designerly embodiment of his many years of hard and important work. I wanted to mix the feeling of comfort with the feeling of personal pride, accomplishment, and memory to create a very personalized relaxation experience. Alternatively, this could also be used as a piece of specialty furniture in a private heart clinic. Both the modelling and rendering have been done in Fusion 360, Cinema 4D and Adobe Photoshop.

Learning points

Conceptualization — how do I reflect the heart surgeon's decades of life-saving work in a piece of furniture? What is an appropriate aesthetic? How does symbolism fit into that?

In order to make the most out of an unexpected and unique result, I need to create countless iterations to create the best version which embodies that serendipidy.

Modelling, material authoring, rendering, and 3D printing.

How can the body lean into the heart and be enveloped by it?
